I love this video! It is amazing when people are kind to each other! All of the students were glued to it as it played.
For the past two weeks, the first graders have been learning about what the term "bucket filler" means. The idea is that everyone carries an invisible bucket. You fill people's buckets by being nice and doing nice things for them. However, if you are mean you are a "bucket dipper". The students also learned that if you fill a bucket your bucket fills up too and if you are a bucket dipper your bucket will be dipped in as well. Below is a picture of the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Below are examples of what the students believe they can do to fill buckets in the respectable areas. I have an example from each 1st grade class. I absolutely love the third one on Mrs. Thoreson's!! :)
Below is a picture that was drawn by a kindergarten student depicting how the buddy bench works. (Follow the arrows) The sad and lonely stick figure, in the upper right hand corner, decides to sit on the buddy bench. Another student comes and asks the sad and lonely student to play. At the bottom of the page sad and lonely student is playing basketball with other students!! What a great job! I am very proud of the students and how invested they are becoming with the BUDDY BENCH!!
Since the Buddy Bench has come to Jefferson, each student has had the option to pledge to be a buddy not a bully. By pledging, the student says that if they ever see someone sitting on the bench they will go over and ask them to play. 320 students signed my door saying "I pledge to be a BUDDY not a bully!"
